In the early 90’s, we experienced an Art Deco revival which pervaded architecture, fashion, and graphic design. The poster for The Rocketeer (1991) is spot on—a gorgeously executed homage to the period by John Mattos. With most current movie posters following what is considered a safe formula of actor stacking, a poster design such as The Rocketeer would be a hard sell today. But as a result of this trend, we now have a popular tendency in the design community to reimagine movie posters with fresh enthusiasm. Viva la grafica!

John Mattos is an award-winning illustrator who has applied his crisp, colorful retro style to numerous projects in his 43-year career. His “Rocketeer” poster was selected as one of the 100 best movie posters of all time by the American Film Institute.
