In UAB Theatre’s production of God of Carnage, tensions emerge when a playground altercation between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of Brooklyn parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. In creating this depiction, one word came to mind as I read scenes from the story: grotesque. This led me to imagine a visual one might find in psychedelic magazines or underground comix. Characterized by exaggerated, grotesque figures and irreverent imagery, these styles are most closely associated with the countercultural movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. Here’s more of my work from UAB’s 2024-25 Season.
